Okay, anti-brunchers, you know her, you love her…Claire Doody of Copper Union is back for the second half of our conversation. We’ll pick up where we left off…Claire returning to her business after surviving pancreatic cancer, and we’ll talk about her plans for the future and why everyone is doing plus sized clothing wrong! Also: a special cameo from her cat!
Our good friend Gillian makes a call to the Clotheshorse Hotline about Christmas sweaters…and well, Amanda has some strong feelings there. And we’ll finally find out where this whole Christmas sweater phenomenon began.
And Amanda will declare it once and for all: THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS FATPHOBIC. And it’s kinda poisoning the lives of everyone. Fatphobia has its origins in racism and classism (and probably misogyny, too). It’s something that we all need to unpack alongside all the other ugly biases in our brains. Here’s some further reading and listening to get you started:
Aubrey Gordon (Your Fat Friend) has an amazing new podcast called Maintenance Phase (one of the favorites here at Clotheshorse HQ) and a new book (can’t wait to read it) called What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat.
Claire recommends another podcast, The Fat Lip.
Listen to this short segment from NPR about fatphobia’s racist origins, an interview with Sabrina Strings, author of Fearing the Black Body.
